Ortho-Trauma Management

India's First AO Knowledge Lab at Max Super Speciality Hospital

The knowledge lab and reference centre will emphasise on the education of young surgeons on trauma care

Max Institute of Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket recently launched India's first Association of Osteosynthesis (AO) knowledge lab at its premises. The lab was inaugurated by Prof Thomas P Ruedi, Founding Member AO Foundation, Switzerland and Prof Chris van der Werken, Past President AO Foundation, Switzerland.

According to Dr SKS Marya, Director, Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement, Max Super Speciality Hospital, who will be the programme leader, "At present there is no such lab that exists in India to train our fellows in orthopaedic trauma. The AO knowledge lab and reference centre will emphasise on the education of young surgeons on trauma care, so that people are benefited through better treatment modalities".

He further added, "Orthopaedic injuries and conditions can often be quite painful and debilitating. By reducing pain, increasing movement and mobility, effective treatment can dramatically improve quality of life of the patients. A well-equipped trauma centre provides state-of-the-art knowledge and latest treatment modalities in orthopaedic care and continuing education is the key to provide continuing quality patient care. The fellowship centre will serve as an educational hub for young India orthopaedic surgeons, under the aegis of 'Indians train Indian'. AO India Fellowship Centre will focus on guidance and treatment of a vast range of conditions or injuries in the field of trauma that occur in adolescence, middle age and old age."

The AO Centre at Max Healthcare will be a fellowship centre offering multiple speciality solutions in AO techniques to orthopaedic surgeons, interested in fracture management through fellowship programs. The fellowship centre would play a major role by educating upcoming surgeons with problems that range from fractures, to more specific conditions that require highly specialized procedures and treatment through after-care.

According to Dr Pervez Ahmed, Executive Director, Medical Operations, Max Healthcare, "The Global initiation of AO knowledge lab at Max Healthcare marks our foray in the field of ortho-trauma management. This is the first education centre of its kind in India with the entire range of services for class room training and hands-on laboratory experience."

The lab and referral centre will encourage the development of integrated learning of fellows via bone-model demonstration, plexi-glass implant demonstration, Instrument demonstration and AO educational material viz. books, videos etc. To spread the AO philosophy; the centre will invite a batch of 10-12 young surgeons for group discussion exercises once in every quarter. Familiarisation with principles, indications, planning techniques and handling complications in the areas of osteosynthesis - bone joining will be taught. This applies not only to fractures but also polytrauma management.
