HEART-LUNG SUPPORT
DESIGNED FOR SAVING LIVES

Everyday more than 1,000 people in Germany alone die as a result of cardiovascular failure. But if the patient is quickly connected to a mechanical circulatory support system like Cardiohelp, doctors gain valuable time and can save lives.

Cardiohelp is the world's smallest and lightest (9.4 kg) heart-lung support system. The portable system provides an extracorporeal replacement for the patient's circulation and respiration.

Cardiohelp is light enough to be carried by one person and compact enough to be used in a helicopter or vehicle.

Cardiohelp not only opens up new possibilities for the emergency services, but, in the view of experts, enables a paradigm shift in the field of intensive care.

Cardiohelp is the first and only hybrid pump/ oxygenator device (heart-lung support system) with transport approvals for CPB use during cardiac surgery and for respiratory and/ or circulatory extracorporeal support in the cardiac catheter laboratory and the medical and surgical intensive care units. Of particular significance is the ability of Cardiohelp to support patients on ECLS whilst being transported by surface or air to specialist hospitals for treatment. There is every indication that the inter-hospital transfer of critically ill patients will increase significantly in the future. For example, patients with diagnosed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) in rural hospitals can now be transported safely and easily using Cardiohelp.

Cardiohelp now provides a compact, easy-to-use, reliable and safe extracorporeal respiratory and/ or circulatory support system for a number of applications in varying locations within and outside the hospital environment. Cardiohelp's intuitive fast set-up and handling enables support to be initiated rapidly and safely by medical staff even in hospitals that do not have a cardiac surgery service. This means that patient's diagnosed with, for example ARDS, multiple organ failure, hypothermic cardiac arrest, anaphylactic shock, low cardiac output (during coronary angiography or PTCA), pulmonary embolism and intoxication as well as those who need cardiopulmonary resuscitation, can now receive appropriate and immediate support and therapy whenever and wherever its needed.

Extra Corporeal Life Support (ECLS) is today a standard procedure for short term Cardio Pulmonary Bypass (CPB) during surgery and for Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for both shorter and prolonged respiratory and/ or circulatory support. In both applications the essential components are an oxygenator (artificial lung) and a blood pump and within the HLS Modules even a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). Maquet cardiovascular is in the technological forefront internationally as a developer and supplier of these two devices and other associated devices.

Cardiohelp is a new, unique, hybrid, state-of-the-art pump combined with an oxygenator for use during CPB and for both short and prolonged ECLS/ECMO both inside and outside the operating room.
