Narayana Health(NH) (formerly Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospitals) founded by Dr. Devi Shetty with 23 hospitals across 14 cities in India, announced the launch of its tertiary care multispecialty hospital ‘Health City Cayman Islands’ (HCCI) in Grand Cayman – the Caribbean region of North America. Honorable Alden McLaughlin, Premier of Cayman Islands will inaugurate the hospital on 25th February 2014 in the august presence of Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Health, India and Dr. Anthony R. Tersigni, President and CEO, Ascension Health Alliance, USA.

With over a decade’s experience in healthcare, Narayana Health is replicating its successful low-cost, high-quality healthcare model in America. It is for the first time that an Indian healthcare chain has set-up a hospital in the Western world. Health City Cayman Islands is the result of a long-term vision to bring enhanced medical care and tertiary level super-speciality healthcare services to people living in the Cayman Islands, the Caribbean region and the Americas. The project is an outcome of a vision shared by ‘Narayana Health’ and ‘Ascension Health Alliance’ – one of the largest, private, non-profit healthcare networks in the United States. ‘Healthcare that work; Healthcare that is safe and Healthcare that leaves no one behind.’

Commenting on the launch of Health City at Cayman Islands, Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Health said, “Our mission is to make world-class healthcare affordable to all. Health City Cayman Islands is part of that vision and we’re looking forward to serve the people of this region. America is a leader in healthcare innovation and technology and any processes and protocols established and proven there are typically well received in rest of the world.” He also added, “We are glad to be associated with Ascension Health Alliance who shares the same vision of making healthcare accessible and affordable to all.”

With healthcare costs spiraling out of control in U.S., Narayana Health’s model of ‘Health City’ will bring down the cost of healthcare making it accessible and affordable thereby attracting large numbers of health seekers from across the region. As part of phase-I, the 104-bed tertiary-care hospital will provide medical services not widely available in the region such as open-heart/bypass surgery, angioplasty, heart-valve replacement, paediatrics and orthopaedics including joint replacements. Spread across 107,000 sq.ft, the hospital is built to the highest safety standards and meets the most extreme conditions in the Caribbean region, which has a population of approximately 40 million.

Commenting about this expansion, Dr. Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, Vice Chairman, MD & Group CEO, Narayana Health said,” Setting up the Health City in Cayman Islands was a strategic decision by the Group, as it has a well-developed infrastructure, and is high on tourism. The Cayman Islands have a safe and stable economy and is geographically positioned to serve the Caribbean and the Americas. Our tertiary care hospital will provide the much-needed healthcare solutions to the Island, as well as to the greater Caribbean region. HCCI is an opportunity to demonstrate how the Group’s high-quality, low-cost healthcare model can be successful and impactful in a Western environment.”

HCCI is staffed by clinical and administrative professionals from two continents and three nations and will employ close to 140 people including physicians, registered nurses, paramedical professionals, support and administrative staff. The majority of the clinical staff is from Narayana Health (NH) in India with doctors trained and worked in the UK or US. Majority of the clinicians from NH have worked together as a team in India, and they have been specifically trained to support a ‘world culture’ at HCCI where a patients from acrossthe world will feel at ease.

Acknowledging the support given by the Government of Grand Cayman, Dr. Raghuvanshi said, “The Government of Cayman Islands was also encouraging as it created an environment to broaden the economic base to allow for new jobs and careers in healthcare as well as to develop new business opportunities. We are happy that the doctors with Indian medical degrees have been recognised by the Grand Cayman governing body.”

The Cayman government is a key supporter of HCCI and has reduced regulatory barriers and provided various incentives and cooperative actions to the project. This project will act as a major initiative, designed to expand the country’s economic base beyond tourism and financial services. Health City Cayman Islands (HCCI) is guided by a Board of Directors with representatives from Ascension Health Alliance and Narayana Health, as well as the Cayman business community.

Health City Cayman Islands is a US$2-billion project to be built in phases over 15 years on a 200-acre site in the High Rock area of East End on Grand Cayman. It will include a tertiary-care hospital, an educational facility, a biotech park and an assisted living community. The project will aim to house 2000 beds post completion. An official groundbreaking ceremony was held on August 27, 2012 for this project. The first phase of the project costing $70-million was completed in 18 months.
