AIOS appoints Dr Natarajan as President

He has performed more than 27000 exclusive Vitreo-retinal surgeries and trained 64 Vitreo-retinal surgeons from India and all over the world

All India Opthalmological Society (AIOS), one of the largest Eye Doctor’s Society in India consisting of more than 22000 members announced the installation of renowned ophthalmologist Dr S Natarajan as President during the 77th Annual Conference held in Indore. Prof Dr S Natarajan is a 3rd Generation Ophthalmologist, also the President of All Ocular Trauma Societies in the world and a pioneer in Vitreo – Retinal Surgery in India.

Dr Peter Weidemann , President International Council of Ophthalmology said, “We are extremely delighted to have Dr S Natarajan as the new President of AIOS. With many firsts to his credit, Dr Natarajan is a visionary and under his leadership we look forward to some great initiatives for the betterment of the people in India. We at ICO aim at Enhancing ophthalmic education and helping ophthalmologists meet the needs of their communities.”

Dr Natarajan runs the Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital as an international centre for Vitreo Retinal Surgery and Research. He has performed more than 27000 exclusive Vitreo-retinal surgeries and trained 64 Vitreo-retinal surgeons from India and all over the world. Dr. Natarajan is the most invited teaching faculty in the world and was awarded with the prestigious Padmashree Award by the President of India in 2013 in recognition for distinguished service in the field of medicine.

Dr Natarajan also established a non-profitable Public Charitable Trust – Aditya Jyot Foundation for Twinkling Little Eyes. The Foundation runs outreach programmes in rural and urban slums and tribal areas that strive to provide quality eye care for the underprivileged. The foundation is committed to reduce both avoidable and unavoidable blindness and has established a R&D Unit- ‘Aditya Jyot Research in Vision and Ophthalmology’ to establish cutting edge research and technology to understand the bio-mechanism of eye diseases and to discover novel therapeutic approaches including regenerative medicine.

Another achievement is Dr Natarajan’s Aditya Jyot Prof Dr N S Sundaram Genetic Clinic, a first-of-its-kind in Maharashtra that is committed to dedicate research in the field of Hereditary Eye Diseases.

Dr Natarajan commented, “I am honoured to take this role and AIOS is determined that every Indian deserves eye check up and committed to provide the same.”

Dr Natarajan also initiated Aditya Jyot Diabetic Retinopathy Urban Mumbai Slum Study (AJ- DRUMSS) which is funded by the World Diabetic Federation and Sir Dorabji Tata trust grant. It is an ongoing population-based cross sectional study conducted to create awareness for early detection and intervention methods to estimate the prevalence and study the risk factors associated with diabetic retinopathy (DR) in Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Commenting on the same, Dr Natarajan said, “Genetic factors are playing important roles in progression of diabetic retinopathy in diabetic patients. Hence, our focus is to understand the genetic profile of diabetic patients to prevent the burden of preventable blindness. Through our project we have evaluated prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in urban slums of Mumbai.We have screened over 70000 people in Diabetic Retinopathy camps, more than 100000 children were screened in school screening programs, 1, 70, 000 households were covered in door to door eye awareness camps in slums and about thousands of free cataracts surgeries were performed.”
