National Medical Commission withdraws notice to discontinue CPS Mumbai courses

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially withdrawn its public notice dated August 16, 2024, which had announced the discontinuation of all courses offered by the College of Physicians & Surgeons (CPS), Mumbai. This withdrawal comes in compliance with an order from the Hon’ble High Court of Judicature at Bombay dated August 22, 2024.

The initial notice by the NMC had sparked concerns and speculation within the medical community. CPS, established as an “Examining Body” by the Indian Government in 1912, is defined under the erstwhile IMC Act 1956 and section 2(i) of the NMC Act 2019. It holds a unique position in Maharashtra as the only institution of its kind, playing a significant role in the region’s healthcare sector.

Dr Ajay D. Sambre, President of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Mumbai, welcomed the NMC’s decision, stating, “CPS welcomes this decision by NMC and with this decision, all negative remarks and speculations will stop.” He added, “With this order, not only CPS but the entire alumni of CPS and the future students have received justice.”

The controversy surrounding the potential discontinuation of CPS courses had raised questions about possible regional dynamics and competition influencing the NMC’s move. Despite the withdrawal of the notice, these concerns remain largely unaddressed.

CPS has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high standards of medical education and expressed its readiness to work constructively with the NMC and other medical bodies to ensure compliance and continue its legacy of producing qualified medical professionals.
