Samsung Medison completes acquisition of French AI ultrasound firm Sonio

Samsung Medison, a global medical equipment company and affiliate of Samsung Electronics, completed the acquisition of French ultrasound AI software company Sonio SAS on August 31. The acquisition process was finalised following regulatory approvals, including from the French Ministry of the Economy and Finance.

Sonio, co-founded in 2020 by Indian entrepreneur and CTO Deepak Prakash, specialises in developing AI-driven solutions for obstetrics and gynaecology ultrasound. The company will remain independent post-acquisition, continuing its growth from its headquarters in France.

Sonio’s flagship product, Sonio Detect, is an FDA 510(k) cleared AI assistant that offers feedback on ultrasound examination quality, with over 90 per cent sensitivity in recognising foetal ultrasound views. Samsung Medison plans to leverage Sonio’s AI expertise alongside its own ultrasound systems to advance AI-enhanced workflows in prenatal care.

Samsung Medison CEO Yong Kwan Kim expressed his perspective on the acquisition, stating, “We have great respect and admiration for what the Sonio team has built in the area of maternal care. Through the acquisition of Sonio, Samsung Medison will continue to deliver upon our promise to improve the quality of people’s lives with technology.” He highlighted that the collaboration will combine best-in-class ultrasound AI technology and reporting capabilities.
