ICMR designates Madras Diabetes Research Foundation as Collaborating Centre of Excellence
Recognition highlights MDRF’s contributions to diabetes research and public health
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has designated the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) as a Collaborating Centre of Excellence (CCOE). This recognition underscores MDRF’s contributions to biomedical research, particularly in the field of diabetes care and management.
MDRF, the research arm of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre in Chennai, is one of only 20 centres across India to receive this designation. The honour follows MDRF’s earlier global recognition by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for its pioneering work in diabetes research.
Dr V Mohan, Chairman of MDRF, and Dr R M Anjana, President of MDRF, stated, “We are deeply honoured to receive this recognition from ICMR. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team of scientists and staff, whose research continues to make significant strides in diabetes care. Our long-standing collaboration with ICMR, spanning more than a decade, has enabled us to drive impactful research in diabetes. We are confident that this partnership will continue to yield transformative results as we work towards tackling the growing diabetes burden and improving public health outcomes in India and globally.”
Established in 1996, MDRF has grown into one of Asia’s largest diabetes research institutions. It has published more than 1,770 research papers and is supported by a team of over 20 scientists specialising in areas including diabetes epidemiology, precision medicine, genomics, and nutrition.
MDRF has also served as the national coordinating centre for the ICMR-led INDIAB study, which is one of India’s most comprehensive studies on diabetes and non-communicable diseases. This designation from ICMR reinforces MDRF’s position as a leader in diabetes research and its commitment to improving health outcomes.
