Highlighting the challenges faced by students with type 1 diabetes during examinations, a call has been made to the Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, to ensure standardised accommodations across all educational boards in India.
A.A. Rahim, Member of Rajya Sabha, Member-Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs and Member-Consultative Committee on Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has addressed a formal letter to the Education Ministry, urging special provisions for students with type 1 diabetes—a lifelong autoimmune condition requiring consistent management of glucose levels, insulin administration, and diet. The demands aim to alleviate the additional stress faced by these students during critical exam periods.
Currently, the Government of Kerala has introduced a progressive policy granting students with type 1 diabetes an additional 20 minutes per hour during public examinations. The policy also allows students to carry essential items such as insulin, glucometers, and snacks into examination halls. Similarly, CBSE has issued circulars permitting similar accommodations.
The letter appeals to the Union Ministry to implement these critical measures nationwide to promote inclusivity and equity:
Standardised policy: Instructing all state and central educational boards to adopt a uniform policy granting additional time and facilities to students with type 1 diabetes during exams.
Allowance for medical essentials: Ensuring that glucose monitoring devices, insulin, and snacks are permitted in examination halls.
Awareness creation: Educating schools and examination authorities about the unique needs of students with type 1 diabetes to foster an inclusive environment.
These provisions align with the principles of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, which mandates reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
By addressing these challenges, the Ministry has an opportunity to set a precedent for equitable and compassionate educational practices. Such initiatives would significantly alleviate the burden on students with type 1 diabetes and their families, ensuring a supportive environment for academic success.
