110 million unit sales predicted in smart healthcare and fitness wireless accessories by 2017

Juniper Research has released a report which predicts that the total market for smart wireless accessories will reach 110 million units in 2017, up from 10 million in 2012. It claims that wireless smart devices linked to smartphones and tablets will gain popularity in the coming years. The report also observes that Nike, Jawbone Up and such other companies are educating the market on how such ‘smart hardware’ can use the smartphones’ processing power to analyse and relay information. This, in turn, can be used to manage chronic disease such as diabetes or COPD.

Smart wireless accessories will become an important tool for the self-management of chronic disease, although more complex mHealth ecosystems will require bespoke devices, partly because the smartphone is not yet seen as a medical tool,” says Anthony Cox. “This means that bespoke mHealth devices will also develop,” he says. Juniper Research found that the smart wireless accessories market has both, new-entrants such as Square and iZettle, and established players, like Nike and Adidas.
