Conference on breastfeeding to help meet MDG

The global Breastfeeding Initiative for Child Survival (gBICS), together with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Women and Child Development is organising the four-day World Breastfeeding Conference ‘Babies Need Mom-made, Not Man-made’, from December 6-9, 2012 at India Habitat Centre (www.worldbreastfeedingconference.org).

This conference is being organised to highlight the need to increase support to women and families in practicing good infant and young child feeding so that countries can meet their Millennium Development Goals (MDG) of reducing malnutrition and infant and child mortality. These practices include initiating breastfeeding within one hour of birth, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and introduction of adequate amounts of complementary foods after that, along with continued breastfeeding.

With participation expected from all concerned sectors in this vital fight to improve breastfeeding rates for the sake of children’s survival, health and development, the conference promises to be the beginning of a significant step towards increasing breastfeeding rates worldwide.
