Scots university delegation to visit Mukti Clinic

Senior representatives from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, are visiting India this week as the University builds on its collaborative work with Mukti Clinic, a prosthetics and orthotics clinic in the Chennai district.

The Mukti Clinic has been providing artificial limbs free of charge for the last 27 years and the University has recently developed a working relationship to help further its work in the community.

Lady Eileen McDonald, University of Strathclyde Ambassador for Mukti, is leading a delegation to visit the clinic and will meet some of the patients who have benefited from the work being carried out.

During the visit, the delegation from the University will meet staff at the clinic and spend time with three of the younger patients who have benefited from the innovative techniques being used.

Lady McDonald said, “Through the University’s relationship with Mukti, it provides a great opportunity for our students to work in different cultures and with new technologies that can really make a difference.”

Students from the University’s National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics have also visited the clinic this year and every year from January, four students will spend time working there to assist staff and enhance their own education experience.

Meena Dadha, Managing Trustee of Mukti said, “Mukti, a project of MS Dadha Foundation, is a charitable organistion with the primary objective to provide prosthesis to the amputees and make them mobile. So far, almost a quarter million prosthesis and calipers have been provided, all free of cost.

“The fact that the service is provided to thousands of people makes it an ideal fit for a case study for University students. It provides them a wealth of experience, which is otherwise difficult. For Mukti, it is an opportunity to share their knowledge and expertise with all those interested in the cause.

“I am sure, Mukti will benefit from the expertise of the University of Strathclyde and the recognition of Mukti’s services by institutions like Strathclyde is a matter of pride.”
