SRL Diagnostics launch test to reveal high toxic lead content in human bodies

SRL Diagnostics, one of the leading pathology and diagnostics networks in India, has introduced Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, an advanced technology test that helps in detecting toxic metal content in human body.

Lead is the highest toxic metal to be found in human bodies. According to medical fraternity, extreme pollution, construction activity and indiscriminate use of Ayurvedic medicines are the primary reasons for the presence of the toxic metal in human bodies. Even a small amount of exposure to lead can cause long term health hazards, especially in children. People working in the metal industry are exposed to toxic metals on a daily basis and therefore are at high risk. These people need to regularly undergo a test that detects the presence of the toxic metals in their bodies.

According to the latest findings by SRL Diagnostics, of the 600 odd samples received every month for Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, which detects metal content in body fluids, about 350 contain lead. This is followed by copper (125), zinc (50) and other metals such as arsenic, mercury, aluminium and chromium.

The presence of lead in human bodies can result in anaemia, hypertension, impaired fertility, etc. Also, lead does not allow other toxic metals such as copper and zinc to be flushed out of the body. Lead can remain in the body for more than 45 years.

Several analytical techniques are available for detection of metal toxicity in human bodies, but selecting the most appropriate one is important in order to obtain accurate and reliable results. Atomic absorption and mass spectrometry are worldwide accepted analytical methods.

Commenting on the occasion, Dr B R Das, President – Research and Innovation, SRL Diagnostics, said, “The number of samples with metal content have gone up over the years. We started in 2010 with about 250 samples monthly and today we screen around 600. SRL’s atomic absorption spectroscopy test can detect the presence of toxic lead in the human body that can be potentially very harmful. The test will help in saving many lives as once the presence of metals in the body is confirmed, suitable treatment can be initiated.”

SRL’s Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy reportedly has the potential to play a significant role in healthcare. The diagnosis of heavy metal toxicity requires observation of presenting symptoms, obtaining a thorough history of potential exposure, and the results of laboratory tests. Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (GFAAS) used in laboratory testing measures the quantity of specific, potentially toxic metals in the blood, urine, or more rarely, in the hair or other body fluids or tissues. Thus, it helps a clinician in ruling out suspicion and confirming metal-specific toxicity in patients diagnosed with dizziness, migraines, diarrhoea, nausea, and other symptoms. Based on diagnostic test results, treatment to remove heavy metals from the patient’s body can be initiated.
