Australia digital health market to grow at 8% CAGR through 2033

Telehealth and remote monitoring key to addressing rising healthcare demands in Australia, says GlobalData

Australia’s healthcare sector is facing rising demand for digital health solutions, driven by an ageing population burdened with an array of chronic and mental health disorders. This surge in healthcare needs has made digital platforms, such as telehealth and remote monitoring, essential to provide more efficient and accessible care for improved overall patient outcomes. Against this backdrop, Australia’s digital health market is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 8 per cent through 2033, forecasts GlobalData.

GlobalData’s research shows that Australia accounted for around 12 per cent of the Asia-Pacific (APAC) digital health market in 2024, driven by country’s strong investment in healthcare technology and government-backed efforts to improve access to digital care services, especially for elderly care.

Kanchan Chauhan, Medical Devices Analyst at GlobalData, comments, “Technologies such as telehealth, and digital health records are increasingly being utilised, resulting in enhanced healthcare results and streamlined service delivery. Despite challenges such as limited digital literacy in some patient groups and the need for stronger cybersecurity measures, the expanding use of digital healthcare is driving the market.”

Recently, the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care has launched a program to implement telehealth services in 30 aged care homes, focusing on virtual nursing to improve patient care. This initiative, part of the 10-year Aged Care Data and Digital Strategy, aims to develop a framework to deliver safe, high-quality virtual nursing, while also exploring artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies.

Additionally, a consortium of 15 Primary Health Networks in the country has recently introduced a free telehealth training package for aged care staff, addressing service gaps, particularly in rural areas.

Key companies driving digital health market in Australia include Teladoc Health, Cerner Corp, Siemens Healthineers, and Philips. Teladoc Health’s telehealth solutions, such as InTouch Vantage and VITA Remote Presence Robots, support hospital care and remote monitoring. Siemens provides advanced telemedicine tools, including the HeartStart Telemedicine System, which facilitates real-time cardiac data transmission between emergency services and hospitals. Philips also has a significant presence in the market with its virtual care solutions. These companies, along with Cerner’s electronic health records, are pivotal in advancing Australia’s digital healthcare infrastructure.

Chauhan adds, “With government initiatives and innovative solutions gaining momentum, Australia’s digital health market is on track to play an increasingly important role in improving healthcare outcomes, especially for vulnerable and aging populations. The projected market expansion reflects the urgent need for these services and the potential for further innovation in healthcare delivery.”
