A mini walkathon took place on October 2, 2024, at Apollo Hospitals, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month celebrations. The oncological unit of the hospital indicated that early diagnosis and screening of breast cancer, among other initiatives, contributed to the success of the event.
The 2nd Annual “Pink Saree Run” featured participants wearing pink sarees to support breast cancer awareness. The event commenced at 6 am, starting from Apollo Hospitals and proceeding to Delmia Circle. More than 700 participants, including hospital staff, doctors, patients, and their families, joined the walk.
Dr. Manish Mattoo, CEO of Apollo Hospitals-Karnataka and Central Region; Dr Jayanti Thumsi, Lead Surgeon – Breast Oncology; and Dr Vijay Agarwal, Lead and Senior Consultant, Medical Oncologist, alongside Dr Vishwanath S, Senior Consultant and Academic Advisor in the Department of Medical Oncology, led the medical parade.
“This initiative motivates many women to turn self-screening or having a mammogram or a breast exam into a priority,” stated Dr Thumsi. “It will also encourage them that catching the disease early allows for quick and efficient treatment.”
The Pink Saree Run served as a significant march for hope and happiness. “Saree-clad participation provides a creative and cultural perspective to the event, thus increases the level of participation, as well as enjoyment,” said Dr Manish Mattoo. “It also works towards bringing people together in the spirit of fitness and breast cancer awareness.”
This approach promoted rehabilitative strategies that encouraged mothers and their families to incorporate health into their daily routines, ultimately transforming households and strengthening the community.
