According to the hospital, MICS is a much superior alternative to open heart surgery
A team of surgeons led by Dr Manish Tiwari, cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon of Shree Krishna Hospital performed aortic valve replacement with minimal invasive technique(MICS) on a 26 year old man. This operation has been done for the first time in this region.
Sameer Khan from Dhulera village of Umreth district, Gujarat was hospitalised with heavy chest pain .The aortic valve, one of the two main valves on the left side of heart which regulates blood flow by opening and closing, and allowing blood to flow throughout the body was almost closed .
According to the hospital, MICS is a much superior alternative to open heart surgery. The uniqueness of the surgery is that it is done through a small cut(two inches) on right side of chest and then valve is reached from small space between the ribs and no bones are cut in contrast to open surgery where long midline cut (7-8 inches) is made and chest bone is cut.
Dr Tiwari says, “It is a very complex and technically difficult surgery. Through the small incision and keyhole opening, the surgeon has to perform the surgery with special instruments by exploring, removing, or repairing inside the body.”
Reportedly, in Gujarat only a handful of four to five surgeons are capable of this surgery. Most of the surgeon avoid MICS as it needs special training and is very complex and time consuming. This form of surgery is safer than open surgery and allows one to recover faster and heal with less pain and scarring. Moreover the patient suffers less pain, has a very small scar (barely visible from outside) , hospital stay is cut to only four to five days and can return to normal activities within two weeks.
