P D Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, reinforced its commitment to provide quality healthcare in the city of Mumbai by honouring the organ donors / family members of cadaver donors for their heroic act of saving lives of patients. During this year’s Annual Organ Donor Felicitation Programme more than 50 donors and their family members were felicitated for their selfless act of giving.
Expressing gratitude to the families for donating organs of their loved ones, Gautam Khanna, CEO, PD Hinduja Hospital & MRC said, “It has been our persistent endeavour over the years to counsel and educate people about the importance of organ donation. We are proud to honour courageous donors and their families for their noble act of giving life to others. There should be greater awareness about the need and importance of organ donation in society so that more people can come forward to donate and save precious lives.”
Highlighting the trend and need for organ donation, Dr Alan Almeida, Head of Department, Nephrology, P D Hinduja Hospital & MRC said, “Lakhs of Indians die due to non-availability of organs each year. We, at P D Hinduja Hospital strongly advocate the cause of organ donation. All our efforts are concentrated towards bridging the ever increasing need for organ donors. There has been a steady increase in the number of organ donors in the past few years and we are glad to see more and more people coming forward to support this cause. An organ transplant often means a second chance at life allowing many recipients to return to a normal lifestyle and we hope our efforts will only reinforce our commitment towards nurturing the gift of life.”
P D Hinduja Hospital & MRC played an active role in India’s biggest six-donor recipient Domino Kidney transplant in 2014 as well as the five-donor recipient Domino Kidney transplant in 2013. This year too there were some unique individual cases wherein a mother-in-law donated kidneys to her daughter-in-law; sister-in-law donating to another; and mother-in-law donating to daughter-in-law’s mother and many more.
The felicitation programme was followed by a small cultural activity that kept the audience enthralled throughout. A couple of donors and recipients also shared their heart-wrenching stories with the audience.
