Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, organised the third season of its Cyclothon on September 1st, attracting more than 1,200 cyclists from across Mumbai, including major cycling groups. The event was held to raise awareness about heart health ahead of World Heart Day, which falls on September 29, 2024. Participants cycled through a 30 km and 15 km route across Uttan-Gorai Island, promoting fitness and heart health.
The purpose of the event was to highlight the importance of heart health, with physical inactivity being a major contributor to cardiovascular disease. Dr. Mayuresh Pradhan, Consultant Cardiovascular & Thoracic, emphasised the benefits of regular cycling. “Heart problems are rampant in all age groups and it is not an old man’s disease anymore. Around 75 per cent of people diagnosed with heart disease fail to exercise regularly. Physical inactivity is one of the major contributors to heart disease. Cycling is a great activity loved by people of every age group,” he said, adding that regular cycling reduces the risk of heart disease and promotes overall wellness.
Dr Pankaj Dhamija, Centre Head at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, highlighted the importance of such events for public health education. “Through engaging in events like Cyclothons, we encourage everyone to take charge of their heart health. These initiatives promote physical activity and serve as platforms for sharing vital education stressing the treatment within the golden hour. Moreover, a Cyclothon serves as a reminder that heart health is not just an individual responsibility but a collective journey,” he said.
Sanjay Katkar, Honourable Municipal Commissioner, Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, also commented on the health benefits of cycling, urging citizens to adopt cycling as part of their routine. The eldest participant in the event, 75-year-old Gajendra Umra, shared his experience, stating, “I feel refreshed and relaxed after cycling, for office goers it is very important as it is a form of exercise, it makes you fit. I urge everyone from all age groups to cycle.”
The Wockhardt Cyclothon Season 3 was held as part of the hospital’s ongoing efforts to promote heart health and encourage physical activity among the public.
