Meanwhile, in a related development, RG Stone Urology & Laparoscopy Hospital, Kolkata treated a patient suffering from enlarged prostate gland of 222 grams, till date the largest in this part of the country. In a life saving attempt, the highly experienced faculty of the Hospital successfully operated 68-year old Gouranga Sundar Patra, a resident of the city at the Kolkata facility. The most remarkable thing is the complete surgery had been done by using the world’s latest technology 100 watt HOLEP.
According to Dr Amitava Mukherjee, Consultant Urologist, RG Stone Urology & Laparoscopy Hospital, Kolkata, “Patra was having urinary problems due to which he was having difficulty in passing urine. Many doctors suggested that he opt for open surgery, but the patient was not ready. Patra came to RG for treatment, where we suggested he undergo CT scan, ultrasound, and CECT for correct investigations. After examining, we found out that he had prostate of 222 grams. For the entire surgery, we used 100 watt HoLEP machine. It is the best technique across the globe.”
Dr. Prabir Basu, another Senior Consultant Urologist added, “HoLEP has been proposed to be a new ‘Gold Standard’ in surgical therapy of benign prostatic enlargement (BPH). This is by virtue of not only its safety and efficacy profiles but also due to its proven durability over long term. HoLEP has all the advantages with none of the complications of open prostatectomy. It can be safely done in patients on anticoagulants and those with compromised cardiac status. It does not require any blood transfusions and has none of the complications of TURP. The biggest advantage is the completeness of enucleation. Post operative urodynamic studies reveal superior results when compared to TURP.”
