SEMI launches introductory course on emergency medicine

SEMI has launched an introductory course for emergency medicine (EM), intended to provide the knowledge needed for a month-long EM rotation for clinically-prepared medical students, residents, or practicing physicians. This programme is endorsed by International Federation for Emergency Medicine (IFEM), SAEM and other groups across the world.

This course is co-sponsored by the Emory University Center for Injury Control (a WHO Collaborating Centre), the International Federation for Emergency Medicine (the global federation of national EM organisations) and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (the global association of academic EM physicians). The competencies used have been developed by Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine published in Academic Emergency Medicine, and resources from screened, world-class organisations such as American Academy of Family Physicians, American Heart Association, Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine, Merck Manual for Health Care Professionals, and World Health Organization. The course developer is Jennifer Chu, University of Toronto, and the Advisory Committee comprises Rahim Valani, McMaster University; Steve Lin, University of Toronto; SAEM Committee with key members which consist of Debra Houry, Emory University Center for Injury Control; Deborah Diercks, University of California Davis; and Alan Jones, Carolinas Medical Center); IFEM Committee with key members including Cherri Hobgood, Indiana University and Jim Ducharme, McMaster University. Glen Bandiera, University of Toronto; Laura Hans, University of Toronto; Niranjan “Tex” Kissoon, University of British Columbia are some of the others who have been involved in developing this course.

There are six modules to complete, providing a basic diagnostic and treatment approach to common emergency department presentations through online study and peer-to-peer activities, and local observation and supervised practice with a physician EM mentor. There is a practice quiz in each lesson, and at the end of the course there will be a final exam.

All components of this training are free, including registration, learning, testing, and a certificate of completion.
