As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact everyday life in India and around the world, many healthcare institutions have installed air purifying devices. For instance, O₂ Cure has reportedly installed more than 200 air purifiers in the COVID-19 wards of hospitals like Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Lilavati Hospital, Nanavati Hospital, and Medicity Hospital.

This is in line with several precautionary measures mandated by various government agencies to bring the pandemic under control and ensure proper sanitation and ventilation especially where the exposure levels are high.

Dr Shahshi Kant Singla, Consultant Surgeon, National Heart Institute, Delhi, speaking on the effectiveness of O2 Cure air purifiers using PHI-Cell ® technology says, “These air purifiers can effectively neutralise various hazardous viruses and other pollutants. They use hydrogen peroxide therapy that eliminates microbes and pollutants.”

As per a release, O₂ Cure’s technology has been successfully tested on coronavirus as well as other deadly viruses like SARS-Cov-1, Swine Flu (H1N1), Norovirus, MERS-COV-1 and Bird Flu. Furthermore, it has also been tested for cross contamination by Kansas State University and Sandia National Laboratories where real life sneeze test was conducted through a sneeze stimulation machine, resulting in 99 per cent neutralisation of microbes at 3 feet.

Speaking about the rapidly developing market, Kartik Singhal, Founder, O₂ Cure said, “Air quality is important and people are increasingly realising its significance which is driving the growth of air purifier market. We provide completely bespoke, personalised solutions and experience to our consumers, with a diverse range of customisable air purifiers and monitors. We have solutions for respiratory health issues like asthma, pollen, dust allergy and others. Our range of products aims to keep offices, public areas, residences, and other enclosed areas free of harmful air contaminants like particulate matter, bacterial, microbial, gaseous compounds, odour, and viruses.”

Earlier, the demand for air purifiers was primarily driven by consumers suffering from respiratory disorders. The surge in the demand for air purifiers amidst the pandemic comes from many enterprises who have successfully used it to restore confidence among employees and bring them back to work. Also, people are looking for something that can protect them from germs, viruses, moulds, dust, asbestos, odours, and other indoor pollutants. Factors such as rising health concerns, deteriorating indoor air quality, changing lifestyle preferences, and increasing awareness among consumers regarding the advantages associated with air purifiers, are expected to drive the market growth.

Actor Suniel Shetty, commenting on the USP of O₂ Cure air purifiers and his collaboration with the brand, said, “There is a wide range of air purifiers in the market but O₂ Cure’ offerings are unique as most of the products existing in the market are more of an air conditioner rather than air purifiers. O₂ Cure’s air purifiers have the potential to eliminate deadly microbes by as much as 99.7 per cent and pollutants by 99.99 per cent.”

According to TechSci Research, the size of the India air purifier stood at $49 million in 2019 and is expected to rise at a CAGR of over 28 per cent during 2019-24 to reach over $220 million by 2024. The pandemic further gave a push to the market growth. Further, rising incidents of respiratory diseases, growing technological advancements and increasing disposable income are also expected to boost the demand for air purifiers in the country.
