CAHO launches initiative to improve patient safety and quality healthcare in India

Doctors from Mumbai join hands to address challenges of quality healthcare in India

Creating positive outcomes for quality healthcare and upgrading patient safety standards in India will be the key agenda of the 5th International CAHOCON 2019 to be held in Mumbai for the first time. Themed around Healthcare Quality Should Impact Outcome, the conference will be held on April 13-14, 2019 and is organised by Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organisations (CAHO) which will bring all accredited hospitals together. More than 600 delegates and renowned doctors will be sharing their insights at the conference. The initiative is supported by The International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua), The Asian Society for Quality in Healthcare (ASQua) and Quality Council of India (QCI).

The initiative was launched in a press conference at Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital by, Dr PM Bhujang, President, Association of Hospitals, Dr Rajendra Patankar, COO, Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital, Joy Chakraborty, COO, P D Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Dr Hiren Ambegaokar, CEO, S L Raheja Hospital, Dr Sujit Chatterjee, CEO, L H Hiranandani Hospital, Dr Anupam Karmakar, CEO, D Y Patil Hospital and Dr Deepak Patkar, Medical Director, Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital.

“The aim of the conference is to bring all stakeholders across the healthcare spectrum on a common platform. There is an urgent need to audit healthcare delivery standards and accredit healthcare organisations based on the quality of healthcare they provide to patients. This conference aims at finding the ways and means to build a robust healthcare infrastructure in the country that adheres to global healthcare quality standards,” stated Dr PM Bhujang, President, Association of Hospitals.

“Quality healthcare forms the foundation of a healthy society and a growing economy. We need to ensure that there is no compromise with healthcare standards and people from all strata of society have access to best healthcare systems,” said Dr Rajendra Patankar, COO, Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital.

Joy Chakraborty, COO, P D Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre stated
“The conference will be preceded by 11 pre-conference workshops and master classes across the major hospitals in Mumbai on April 12 2019. Topics to be covered include process re-engineering, hospital planning, leadership development, nursing communication, cyber security and infrastructural safety.

Dr Hiren Ambegaokar, CEO, SL Raheja Hospital mentioned about the debates and panel discussions that are going to take place at the conference. A number of hospitals and laboratories have undertaken projects, which show that how they have helped in impacting outcomes whether in the clinical area, infrastructure area, diagnostic or nursing area. There would be a short presentation on the same. There would also be a Project Excellence Award where the hospital has to prove a certain project that they took and how they have improved the process over the next three months.

Dr Sujit Chatterjee, CEO, LH Hiranandani Hospital, spoke about the the people who will be honoured at the conference for dedicating their work towards promoting quality healthcare. He further stated that the organisation recognises quality champions and young quality achievers and this has become a great motivation for healthcare professionals to excel in this field.

Dr Anupam Karmakar, CEO, DY Patil Hospital spoke about a team in Canada led by Graham and Stewart Dickson that have created LEAD Canada. A model for developing leadership in healthcare. This model has been adopted in many other countries. This team is interacting with senior professionals from India on April 12 2019 at Seven Hills Hospital.

Dr Deepak Patkar, Medical Director, Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital mentioned that one of the best ways to improve quality of healthcare is by improving the processes in the healthcare deliver y. This year at CAHOCON we will be presenting the three best process improvement projects undertaken by the hospitals. This initiative has been started with renowned quality organisation Qimpro. 17 projects were submitted and a team of five assessors have gone through these process improvement projects and selected the best three.
