Recognising the need to raise awareness about the shortage of medical practitioners in rural areas and unavailability of quality medical care, a daylong conference on ‘Rural Health and Sustainable Development’ was organised by the Indian Medical Association in collaboration with Bharat Niti, INHR University Jaipur and Government of Assam, in New Delhi.
Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, emphasised how more doctors should come forward to serve in rural areas to ensure accessibility of quality medical care for the people.
Faggan Singh Kulaste, Minister of State, Health & Family Welfare, Government of India was the Guest of Honour for the event. He said that the need of the hour is to be just, equal and fair to those residing in rural areas. Every person, irrespective of his geographical presence under Article 14,15 and 21 of the Constitution of India has the right to receive quality and safe health care.
Presiding over the event, Dr SS Agarwal, National President, IMA said, “It is indeed an honour to host this conference and witness the attendance of such dignitaries. We thank each and every person who has worked towards making this a success. We at IMA are also doing our bit to ensure that quality healthcare is universally accessible to all. We have recently declared the ninth of every month at the national level as a day dedicated to provide free anti-natal care to women. All 2.7 lakh IMA members have also been asked to adopt girl children who are in need of medical care, but their families are unable to afford their treatment. We look forward to getting the opportunities to organise many more such conferences in the future and make a real impact in the Indian healthcare sector.”
Dr KK Aggarwal, National President (Elect) IMA and Dr RN Tandon, Secretary General (Elect), IMA, in a joint statement said, “IMA is already running successful projects like Aao Gaon Chalen and Aao School Chalen . Conferences like these are essential to bring together relevant stakeholders and find productive solutions to the main issues crippling the healthcare system.”
Himanta Biswa Sharma, Minister of Finance, Health & Education, Government of Assam said that the need of the hour today is to take the ongoing problems of vector borne diseases in the country. He also requested IMA to issue guidelines to its members for the dengue, malaria and Chikungunya.
