Dr Sunil Choudhary, Director – Institute of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, Max Super Specialty Hospital, New Delhi shares insights on the evolving techniques and technologies in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery in India, with M Neelam Kachhap

What is the latest technology in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery in India?

We have recently acquired the SPY Elite Imaging System probably first in India. This imaging system allows surgeons to capture, review, print and archive high-quality image sequences of blood flow in vessels and micro-vessels, tissue and organ perfusion within minutes and in real-time during the course of performing a wide variety of surgical procedures. SPY Elite is a new technology that aides the reconstructive surgeon in assessing tissue perfusion intraoperatively. The information can be valuable to the surgeon and assist in intraoperative decision-making to limit complications and improve clinical outcomes.

Tell us about the latest technique in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery in India?

Migraine surgery or decompression nerve surgery is the latest buzz in our circuit. The greater occipital nerve compression is involved in some patients having migraines. Also we now know of several other nerves that can trigger migraines. Surgical treatment might include decompression of one or more of these nerves, similar to treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, or other nerve compression syndromes. This surgery is beneficial to patients who have exhausted the pool of existing therapies.

Another area of focus for us is the endoscopic or minimally invasive aesthetic surgery. Endoscopic surgery is one of the newest aesthetic surgery techniques. It allows surgeons to operate with fewer conspicuous incisions, reducing obvious scars. Improvements in technology have enabled plastic surgeons to use endoscopy for many cosmetic procedures, including facelifts, forehead lifts, abdominoplasty, and breast augmentation. Endoscopy can also be used in some reconstructive procedures. In many cases, the use of endoscopy results in shorter recovery times.
