Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital (HN RFH) launched Sepsis Cart and ‘Golden Hour’ in a bid to spread much-needed awareness about Sepsis. Each hour’s delay in medical intervention can increase the chances of fatality in Sepsis patients by 7 per cent. The Golden Hour is an endeavour to therefore increase awareness on the importance of swift action. The Sepsis cart will include all the preliminary requirements like Anti-microbials, blood cultures, IV Fluids among other tools of critical care and sepsis code with Pathway (image attached).
This was at the Sepsis Awareness event hosted by Department of Critical Care and Microbiology at HN RFH hosted an event to inform and educate about this condition with a goal to improve outcomes. Likely to be an even bigger killer than heart attacks; sepsis could become the next big national health problem if it is not handled correctly. The program intends to bring in all the senior clinicians from multiple specialities and enlighten upon the need for a more stringent & structured approach towards the optimal care of persons affected with acute infection leading to sepsis.
The event detailed various solutions to improve outcomes in sepsis patients in India:
- Increasing awareness: There is a need to raise awareness among the general population, healthcare professionals, and policymakers about sepsis, its symptoms, and the importance of early recognition and treatment.
- Early recognition and diagnosis: Encouraging healthcare professionals to promptly recognise and diagnose sepsis can facilitate early intervention and improve outcomes. This may involve providing training and resources to healthcare providers on sepsis identification and management.
- Improvement in healthcare infrastructure and resources: Strengthening healthcare infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, and ensuring adequate availability of resources such as diagnostic tools, medications, and trained healthcare professionals are crucial in managing sepsis effectively.
- Standardised guidelines and protocols: Developing and implementing standardized guidelines and protocols for the management of sepsis can help healthcare providers in delivering consistent and evidence-based care to sepsis patients across healthcare facilities.
- Enhanced monitoring and surveillance: Establishing robust monitoring and surveillance systems can help in tracking sepsis cases, identifying trends, and understanding the burden and impact of sepsis on a national level.
- Health education and preventive measures: Promoting health education on practices such as hand hygiene, vaccination, and infection control can help in preventing infections that can ultimately lead to sepsis.
- Collaboration and research: Encouraging collaboration among healthcare stakeholders, researchers, and policymakers can facilitate the development of innovative approaches, guidelines, and interventions to improve sepsis outcomes in India.
The forum discussed on how these suggestions should be implemented in a comprehensive and coordinated manner, taking into account the unique healthcare challenges in India, and involving multi-sectoral stakeholders, including the government, healthcare providers, professional societies, and the community.
