Karnataka reports Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases
ICMR confirms no surge in respiratory illness as HMPV cases detected in Karnataka
According to the PIB press release, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two cases of HMPV in the state, identified through routine surveillance for respiratory viral pathogens. These efforts are part of ICMR’s ongoing monitoring of respiratory illnesses across India.
HMPV, already present globally including in India, has been associated with respiratory illnesses in various countries. However, according to current data from the ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) network, there has been no unusual rise in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in India.
The two HMPV cases identified in Karnataka are as follows:
- A 3-month-old female infant who tested positive for HMPV after being admitted to Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru, with bronchopneumonia. The patient has since been discharged.
- An 8-month-old male infant who tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025, also admitted to Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru, with a history of bronchopneumonia. The infant is currently recovering.
Neither of the affected infants had any history of international travel, indicating that the cases were not linked to foreign travel. The Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation through all available surveillance channels. The ICMR will continue tracking HMPV trends throughout the year.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is providing updates on the situation in China to inform India’s ongoing public health measures. A recent preparedness drill conducted nationwide has demonstrated that India is equipped to manage any potential rise in respiratory illnesses, with prompt public health interventions available if necessary.
