The Low Dead-volume Space (LDS) sterile syringe technology demonstrates 20 per cent greater efficiency. If existing syringes were to deliver one million doses, LDS syringes could provide 1.2 million doses with the same amount of vaccine, a statement said.
It added that LDS syringes minimise the amount of drug left in the device after injection, and thus, optimising vaccine usage. Existing products have a large amount of the vaccine remaining in the syringe after use.
In this regard, Dr A M Deshmukh, President, Microbiologist Society of India, said, “COVID-19 impacted a lot of people in the first wave, and, in the second wave, it has come like a tsunami. Vaccination is the only answer. This new technology behind LDS syringes will help save a large amount of vaccine that is left behind in a regular syringe after the vaccine is administered and will help India administer up to 20 per cent more vaccine doses. There is a dire need of 2,700 million doses per year in India, and if these syringes are used, we can get over 500 million more doses with the same amount of vaccine.”
LDS syringe is designed to minimise the amount of a drug left in the device after injection. It has an integral luer-lock hub, with an extended (three-stage conical) plunger that inserts into the neck of the barrel to expel more fluid from the syringe by pushing the plunger rod.
