Proposes to launch a skin bank in Mumbai
Masina Hospital recently celebrated the Silver Anniversary of The Eric Kharas Burns Research Unit. On this occasion, the hospital also announced the launch of a skin bank in Mumbai. The skin bank will be a value addition to South Mumbai and will give an opportunity to donate skin along with eyes. The availability of skin gives early and safe biological cover to burn injuries reduces infection rates and the number of surgeries to achieve healing.
The burns unit at Masina Hospital was started in the 70s with just four beds assigned to the burn care. Today, there are a total of 22 beds in the burns unit. Apart from Indian patients, foreign patients from Bangladesh, Spain, Kenya, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria and Yemen visit the hospital. Nearly 200 patients were operated/ treated in the last three months with age profile ranging from three-day old to 80-year-old patients.
Dr. Vispi Jokhi, Medical Director, Masina Hospital said, “This unit has acquired a status of a tertiary level – Referral Centre. The complication rates are negligible and remarkably patients go home without disfigurement or contractures. Moisture retaining dressings are used to improve patient comfort and faster recovery. Another notable aspect is our quality intensive care and drug protocols with emphasis on using minimum medicines. Innovative inexpensive diets provide nutritional support at a fraction of a cost compared to parenterals.”
