The course will equip attendees with right tools to carry out training programmes for next generation of physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals

DY Patil University, Navi Mumbai, has teamed up with Mayo Clinic to help bring to the fore the importance of Medical Simulation-Based Education. “Started in the year 2008 by Mayo Clinic, USA, this 3-day “Comprehensive Simulation Instructor Development Course” has, to this day, trained over 300 physicians, nurses and allied health educators,” stated Fredric Meyer, Executive Dean, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

“Attendees will find the training invaluable to their teaching and professional development,” added Dr Meyer.

Dr Michael Maniaci, MD and Associate Medical Director, J Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver Simulation Center, Mayo Clinic in Florida, will arrive at DY Patil University, Navi Mumbai on April 25, 2019 along with his team to equip attendees with the tools to carry out the training programmes for the next generation of physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals. He professes, from experience, that his trainees’ performance is largely dependent on the faculty’s ability to teach, communicate and evaluate their skills. Hence a Simulation Instructor Development Course of this kind is very timely and indispensable to ensure that trainees’ skills and strengths are leveraged in the most effective manner. This course will take place at the DY Patil University Simulation Laboratory.

“In a Medical Simulation Lab it is not the investment that is important though it is highly capital intensive. The most critical aspect is the utilisation. Achieving the optimum level of utilisation by focussing on the efficiency of the training modules and providing the best trainers are the most important factors,” said Dr Vijay Patil, Chancellor, DY Patil University.

DY Patil University’s associated venture with Mayo Clinic to bring forth this course for healthcare professionals is extremely timely. This course will demonstrate fundamental concepts of simulation-based education, develop performance objectives for simulation-based education, create and facilitate a learner focused simulation scenario for a multidisciplinary audience and lead an effective and organised debrief session.

Participants will learn the principles of experiential learning including types of simulation, course design, and debriefing strategies. Learners will practice these concepts with the assistance of experienced faculty.
Simulation provides experiential learning by using simulation to replicate simple as well as complex clinical scenarios, as opposed to an apprentice style of learning. It increases competence in young graduates and can ensure patient safety and reduce patient discomfort. Some might argue that simulation is expensive; although it is cost effective if used properly. “We’ve conducted over 250 workshops and trained 6000+ professionals including consultants, undergraduate and postgraduate students., said Dr Nitin Sippy, Associate Professor, DY Patil University.
