Medvarsity survey reveals priorities and challenges in diabetes care training across India

Survey of over 3,000 Indian diabetologists highlights key areas for professional development and the growing role of AI in diabetes management

Medvarsity, Asia’s largest healthcare EdTech company, released findings from a comprehensive survey of more than 3,000 diabetologists and endocrinologists across India. Released in honour of World Diabetes Day, the survey highlights the primary goals, obstacles, and future outlooks of healthcare providers focused on advancing diabetes care through continuous education and innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).

The survey shows that healthcare professionals prioritise skill improvement, with 90 per cent of respondents emphasising the necessity of ongoing training. When it comes to learning methods, the majority of doctors expressed a preference for collaborative learning, with 75 per cent of participants selecting clinical case discussions and peer reviews as their preferred avenues for professional growth. This choice underscores the importance of real-world, interactive learning.

Among areas for expertise enhancement, 82 per cent of doctors identified the prevention and management of diabetes complications as their top priority, followed closely by advanced insulin management, with 78 per cent keen to develop skills in this field. These results indicate a strong focus on managing complex diabetes cases and improving treatment outcomes for patients.

The survey further identified key challenges that healthcare professionals face in accessing training. Time constraints were the most significant barrier, affecting 65 per cent of respondents, followed by the cost of educational programs (60 per cent) and challenges in balancing personal and professional commitments (58 per cent). Despite these obstacles, there is high demand for AI-related training, with 78 per cent of doctors interested in learning how to use automated insulin dose calculators. There is also strong interest in training for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) analysis systems and diabetic retinopathy screening tools.

Healthcare professionals increasingly see AI as a critical tool in improving diabetes care. According to the survey, the most anticipated AI applications are early detection and diagnosis of diabetes complications (88 per cent) and the development of personalised treatment plans (85 per cent). Additionally, 80 per cent of doctors view automated blood sugar monitoring as essential, highlighting the role of continuous monitoring in effective diabetes management.
