SL Raheja Hospital – A Fortis Associate, Mahim, hosted the Zonal Finals of the 4th edition of its national psychology quiz programme ‘PSYCH-ED, 2019’. Navy Children School, Colaba, Mumbai won the zonal round to qualify for the PsychEd 2019; they battled 11 other schools in the zone to enter the national finals that would be hosted in Delhi.

Psych-ED, the national level annual psychology quiz for school students organised by Dr Samir Parikh, Director, Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Healthcare saw participation of more than 4000 teams, from 200 cities and 700 schools in its 4th edition. The quiz is designed for students from Class XI and XII, directing to test their understanding of psychology and its concepts.

There were four rounds to the quiz. In the first round, the teams were presented with a crossword puzzle to solve. In the second round, each team was asked a total of three multiple choice questions. In the third round, known as the buzzer round, questions were read to all the teams and the first to tap the buzzer would be allowed to respond. The combined score achieved on the above three tasks would determine which teams would compete in final rapid fire round.

The schools that qualified for the Zonal Finals were Hiranandani Foundation School, Powai, Mumbai, Bombay International School, Mumbai, Navy Children School, Colaba, Mumbai, Riverside International School, Ahmedabad, DY Patil International School, Worli, Mumbai, RN Podar School, Mumbai, Bombay Scottish Shool, Mahim, Mumbai, Billabong High International School, Malad, Mumbai, Prabhavati Padamshi Soni International Junior College, Mumbai, Army Public School, Kirkee, Pune and CHIREC International School, Hyderabad.

The quiz was conceptualised and executed under the aegis of Dr Samir Parikh, Director, Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Healthcare. Speaking of this novel initiative Dr Parikh, said, ‘’The objective of the quiz is to impart learning while ensuring that the subject remains engaging and fun for the students. The quiz is will not only propel the students to think outside the box and dig deep into their knowledge and understanding of the human mind. The students will also become a representative for positive mental health and wish to decrease the stigma that shrouds mental illnesses. As professionals in this field, we need to offer these tabooed and stigmatised issues a platform on which they can be showcased without any filters.”

Shruti Gadiyar, Teacher, Navy Children School, Colaba and Abir Ray, Anushka Kala and Riya Thakur, students, Navy Children School, Colaba, who were the winners from Mumbai shared their experience, “The quiz was very challenging, and it encouraged us to explore concepts beyond the academia. This was an exciting, innovative and unorthodox platform for students to learn more about psychology. We will give our best at the national finals and make Mumbai proud.”
