SRL Diagnostics releases study on Vitamin B12 deficiency

North Indian population mostly affected

SRL Diagnostics has released a three-year long study on Vitamin B12 deficiency at pan-India level. Out of the total samples tested, it was found that around 31 per cent were affected with deficiency of Vitamin B12. It was further analysed that Vitamin B12 deficiency is found to be slightly more common in Indian males (35 per cent) than females (28 per cent).

The study also mentioned that Vitamin B12 deficiency is prevalent more in older population i.e. at the age of 60+ in both the genders. Also, Vitamin B12 derangement is seen to be slightly increased in the age group of 16-30 and above 45 in both male and female.

North Indian population seemed to be the most affected with low Vitamin B12 levels followed by West Indian population. The lease derangement in Vitamin B12 status was found in East and South India. The possible reason for a reduced prevalence of Vitamin B12 deficiency in East and South may be the consumption of Vitamin B12-rich diet mainly animal products.

Dr Leena Chatterjee, Director, SRL Labs and SRL Strategic Initiatives said, “There is a significant need for reaching out and making people aware of the causes, symptoms, treatment and importance of testing for Vitamin B12 levels. SRL Diagnostics’ in-house data analysis on Vitamin B12 deficiency tests assesses abnormalities in test results of both men and women residing in various cities representing diverse geographic origin, occupation, socio-economic status and food habits in India.”
