A recent study by Redcliffe Labs has revealed significant findings about the health landscape of India, indicating that one in two individuals is affected by lifestyle disorders. The study, which analysed health data from 2.8 million people across the country, showed that 52 per cent of those impacted were female and 48 per cent male.

The rise in Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) is a growing concern in India. While the nation’s healthcare system has traditionally been affected by infectious diseases, the situation has improved over the years due to efforts by the government, social institutions, and the private sector. These efforts have led to better sanitation, improved infrastructure, increased accessibility, and greater awareness. However, a shift in disease patterns has emerged.

Today, chronic health conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, lipid imbalances, renal disorders, fatty liver, arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer are widespread across the country. The root causes of these conditions include rapid urbanisation, sedentary lifestyles, dietary changes, stress, digital addiction, and the easy availability of ultra-processed junk foods.

Dr. Mayanka Lodha Seth, Chief Pathologist at Redcliffe Labs, commented, “This data shows that non-communicable diseases are no longer limited to older adults. We see these conditions affecting people of all age groups and genders. NCDs have increased from 9 per cent to 20 per cent, and the mortality rate due to preventable & curable NCDs has reached approximately 62 per cent. This is a health crisis for the nation, and prevention is the key to curbing it. We must adopt active lifestyles, revert to nutritious foods, and prioritise periodic health checks to monitor our vitals. Early detection helps in making informed decisions and mitigating the risk of chronic health conditions.”

Preventive healthcare is now seen as essential in managing the rising incidence of NCDs. The first step is increasing awareness and understanding how each individual can contribute to the prevention of these conditions.

Aditya Kandoi, Founder and CEO of Redcliffe Labs, emphasised, “The fact that 1 in 2 individuals is at risk of lifestyle diseases is alarming. While Redcliffe Labs is committed to giving India its right to quality diagnostics, it’s time our community pledges to prevention for better health and well-being. As the largest democracy in the world, we have the power to make wiser choices for a progressive nation, setting the right example for future generations. With over 14.4 million children obese in India—the leading cause of NCDs—we must take this issue seriously and start taking measures today.”

The easy access to processed foods and the growing tendency towards sedentary lifestyles have directly contributed to the increase in lifestyle disorders. This highlights the need for individuals to make healthier decisions, adopt better habits, and prioritise preventive healthcare. Early diagnostics are vital in managing and reducing the impact of these conditions.

Redcliffe Labs has also been active in raising awareness about preventive healthcare. Through digital and community engagement activities, the company reached over 7.2 million people on World Heart Day 2024 and approximately 9.34 million people on World Diabetes Day 2024.

This study acts as a critical reminder for individuals and all stakeholders to prioritise preventive healthcare, an important step in addressing the growing health challenges in India.
