Surgeons at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, conduct first kidney transplant
The recipient was on dialysis for over a year and was wait-listed for over three months
Surgeons at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi recently conducted first kidney transplant on a 56-year-old male, from Bhiwandi, who was suffering from end-stage renal disease. The transplant became possible when a 66-year-old female, admitted at the hospital, was declared brain dead following Subarachnoid Haemorrhage (brain haemorrhage). The recipient was on dialysis for over a year and was wait-listed for over three months.
The family, upon counselling, consented to donate their kin’s organs, saving lives of three deserving recipients by donating kidneys and liver; the corneas were sent to an eye bank. The team that harvested the kidney and transplanted it into the recipient, consisted of Dr Sumit Mehta, Consultant Urologist & Transplant Surgeon, Dr Ramesh Mahajan, Consultant Urologist & Transplant surgeon and Dr Atul Ingale, Nephrologist, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi.
The transplant was made possible with support from the donor’s family, medical social workers, team of clinicians at the hospital and Dr Sujata Patwardhan, General Secretary, Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee, who worked relentlessly to make this transplant happen.
