The initiative spearheaded by The Pravin Agarwal Foundation (TPAF) delivers 32 successful liver transplants with a vision to reach 100 transplants in the next year
The collaborative liver transplant initiative, looking to bring together hospitals, doctors, and funders through crowd sourcing, celebrated its first steps of impact through the successful execution of 32 liver transplants for under-privileged children. The celebration included a talent show performed by child-beneficiaries of the initiative, and also, witnessed the official launch of The Pravin Agarwal Foundation (TPAF), which has spearheaded this entire multi-partner liver transplant programme. India has at least a thousand known cases every year, and this foundation is taking concrete steps to target 100 liver transplants in year 2018.
Speaking about his vision for the foundation, Pravin Agarwal said, “It is important that every child has a chance. The impact of the initiative is not in the numbers, but in the stories of families who have benefited from this programme. We chose this initiative specifically due to the high volume of affected children in India, and the difficulties that underprivileged families face in raising funds towards liver transplants. I would personally like to thank our partners whose support has been invaluable.”
TPAF’s growing list of hospital partners include reputed names like Aster, Narayana Hrudayalaya, KEM and Apollo Hospitals. Besides contributing to the financial model themselves, the hospitals provide families with professional guidance, counselling and high quality operative and post-operative care. Reflecting on the journey thus far, Dr Sonal Asthana, Senior Consultant (HPB & Multi Organ Transplant Surgeon, Aster Hospitals) said, “TPAF is a one-of-a-kind initiative, which galvanises various elements to benefit the child. Early identification and economic support set the platform for us to save precious lives that otherwise would not stand a chance. We are equal partners in helping them overcome financial and medical challenges.”
Milaap, one of India’s largest crowd-funding platforms, has been a key focal point of galvanising a vast number of economic donors and attention towards the cause. The mother of a year-old TPAF beneficiary, Kabir, eagerly added, “TPAF and their family of partners, doctors and contributors came into our lives at a critical time where we had next to no option. TPAF has allowed my child to have a new lease on life. We are grateful to this programme as it saved my family’s life.”
Going forward apart from reaching 100 liver transplants, TPAF is now taking its next steps to achieve a scale of impact. TPAF looks to expand its partner network to add more contributors to the liver transplant programme as it envisions a lasting impact across the country.
