‘Increased accessibility to affordable healthcare is significant in the 2016-17 Union Budget’

Increased accessibility to affordable healthcare is significant in the 2016-17 union budget. This is a welcome move considering access to drugs and quality healthcare has been a long standing issue in the Indian healthcare system. Setting up 3,000 stores for generic drugs; renal dialysis centres in all district hospitals; Rs 1 lakh health insurance cover per family; and an additional top up of Rs 35,000 for elderly citizens will reduce the out-of-pocket healthcare expenditures to some extent. I believe implementation of these on-ground and participation of the private sector will be critical in improving health outcomes. I am happy about the fact that healthcare is one of the nine pillars of growth taken into consideration by the Finance Minister.
