Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, has introduced a 24×7 helpline (8108181081) to provide timely intervention for stroke patients in North Mumbai. Stroke is the second leading cause of death globally, following heart attacks. India, particularly in the South East Asia region, reports the highest incidence, with 1.2 million cases annually. Many people remain unaware of stroke symptoms and the necessary steps to take, often delaying critical treatment.

A stroke occurs when there is a disruption in blood flow to the brain, and timely treatment within a 4.5-hour window can prevent paralysis. Delaying medical attention leads to the loss of 1.9 million neurons every minute. Since the brain cannot regenerate or undergo transplantation, early diagnosis and treatment are essential. In India, there are an estimated 9.6 million stroke cases per year, the highest in the South East Asia region.

Dr Pankaj Dhamija, Centre Head at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, shared a mnemonic to help recognise stroke symptoms: “The mnemonic ‘BEFAST’ can help you identify the signs: B: Loss of Balance, E: Sudden loss of vision in one Eye, F: Facial droop on one side, A: Arm or leg weakness on one side, S: Speaking difficulty, T: ‘Time is Brain’ – act quickly without hesitation. Relatives should call our helpline if someone they know experiences these symptoms. Our team will assess the situation and guide them to ensure timely treatment at our hospital.”

Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, is fully equipped with a dedicated full-time interventional neurologist, in-house CT and MRI facilities, a Cath Lab, and neuro-intensive care under one roof. The hospital provides life-saving treatments such as IV thrombolysis within 4.5 hours of onset and mechanical thrombectomy within 24 hours. As the first hospital in Maharashtra accredited by QAI as an “Advanced Stroke Centre,” it aims to provide comprehensive stroke care and help patients recover swiftly.

The newly launched Wockhardt Stroke Helpline is positioned to guide patients through the crucial steps required for stroke treatment and improve access to critical care in North Mumbai.
